Understanding biliary atresia

Earlier recognition supports faster specialist evaluation

Biliary atresia is a rare disease of infancy in which bile ducts become injured and obstructed. Persistent jaundice, pale or clay-colored stools, and dark urine need prompt medical evaluation.

MMP-7 is one of several tools being studied and used to support evaluation. No single biomarker replaces the complete clinical workup or establishes the final diagnosis by itself.

Measurement technology

TR-FRET: a streamlined fluorescence approach

Time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer is a homogeneous, plate-based technology used for quantitative biomarker measurement.

Its proximity-based donor and acceptor system supports sensitive fluorescence detection with reduced background and a no-wash workflow. Assay performance and appropriate use must be established by each laboratory.
